Turkish supernatural horror film Siccin 9 is set to hit theatres internationally on May 15, with a simultaneous release in Bangladesh at Star Cineplex.
The film is the ninth installment of Turkey’s popular Siccin horror franchise, directed by Turkish filmmaker Alper Mestçi, who is widely known for his works revolving around jinn, black magic and supernatural terror. Over the years, the Siccin series has emerged as one of Turkey’s most successful horror franchises and has gained a strong following among international horror audiences.
Online horror communities, particularly on Reddit, have frequently described the franchise as an “extremely disturbing” and “dark” horror series. Its use of Islamic folklore, jinn mythology, black magic and realistic storytelling has helped the films stand apart from conventional Western jump-scare horror productions.
The story of Siccin 9 revolves around an ancient curse that resurfaces after a mysterious death, gradually affecting an entire bloodline. The narrative follows a mother who resorts to forbidden black magic in an attempt to protect her child.
However, the ritual becomes connected to a gruesome murder committed years earlier, unleashing terrifying supernatural consequences.
The film also follows the character Kemal, who grows up without ever seeing his father. When he eventually returns to his father’s old house, he encounters a horrifying family curse and sinister supernatural forces hidden within the property. What follows is a chilling series of events involving jinn, curses and violent paranormal incidents.
The first film in the franchise was released in 2014. Although Alper Mestçi initially gained recognition through the Dabbe horror series, the Siccin films elevated his reputation internationally. One of the franchise’s defining features is its reliance on Turkish and Islamic folk beliefs instead of traditional Western horror formulas.
Themes such as jinn possession, ruqyah rituals, black magic, graves and hidden family sins are portrayed in a highly realistic manner, making the series particularly popular across Turkey, the Middle East and South Asia.
Over the past decade, Siccin has become one of Turkey’s longest-running and most commercially successful supernatural horror franchises. Despite being produced on relatively modest budgets, the films have consistently drawn strong audiences, encouraging the makers to continue expanding the series.
The trailer for Siccin 9 has already generated significant curiosity among horror fans online. One Reddit user commented that the upcoming installment “could be the scariest film of the series.”
