Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s future as FC Barcelona captain is facing mounting uncertainty, with internal voices at the club questioning whether the German goalkeeper should continue wearing the armband. According to journalist Santi Ovalle, key figures within the club believe it may be time for a change in leadership — not due to any dip in performance, but rather a perceived decline in his influence and popularity within the dressing room.

While Ter Stegen remains Barcelona’s official first captain for now, growing support among senior Barça executives to strip him of the role suggests a shift in sentiment. However, the final decision will not be made by the board. True to tradition, the players will vote to decide their captaincy group, with the election expected to take place around two weeks before the La Liga season begins. Barcelona open their campaign against Mallorca on 16 August.

New manager Hansi Flick, speaking during the club’s pre-season tour in Seoul, made it clear he will not intervene in the process.

“The team is always the one who decides the captains, as has been done in the past. Usually, two weeks before the start of the season,” Flick told reporters.

Despite the growing speculation and the recent arrival of goalkeeper Joan Garcia, Ter Stegen has shown no intention of leaving the club. The 32-year-old is reportedly determined to remain at Barcelona and fight for both his position on the pitch and his standing within the squad hierarchy.

Nonetheless, Ovalle’s report suggests that Ter Stegen no longer commands the same level of trust and authority in the dressing room that he once did. While he has been a long-serving and often reliable figure for the Catalan giants, the upcoming captaincy vote may reveal whether he still holds the respect of his teammates.

As the new season approaches, the outcome of the vote could signal a significant shift in the leadership dynamic at Barcelona — and possibly usher in a new era under Hansi Flick’s stewardship.
