Tawhid Afridi put on 5-day remand

A Dhaka court has placed online content creator Tawhid Afridi on a five-day remand in connection with a murder case filed over the killing of Ashadul Haque in the capital’s Jatrabari area during the July uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque issued the order on Monday after a hearing.

Earlier, CID Inspector Khan Md Erfan, the investigating officer of the case, produced Tawhid before the court and sought a seven-day remand.

Tawhid Afridi, son of MyTV chairman and managing director Nasir Uddin, was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) from Barishal on Sunday night (August 24).
According to the case statement, on August 5, 2024, Md Asadul Haque Babu took part in the July Movement protest in Jatrabari. Around 2:30pm, he was shot. Later, he was taken to the hospital but was declared dead by doctors.

The victim’s father, Zainal Abedin, filed a murder case with Jatrabari Police Station on August 30, 2024, naming 25 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Among the accused, Nasir Uddin was listed as number 22 and his son Tawhid Afridi as number 11.

Earlier, on August 17, Nasir Uddin Sathi was arrested from the Gulshan area in the capital and was placed on a five-day remand the following day. After the remand ended, he was sent to jail on August 23.
