BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the first chief minister of a BJP-led government in West Bengal at a grand ceremony held at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday, reports Anandabazar.
Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari in the presence of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers, chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, and senior BJP leaders.
The national anthem of India was played at Brigade ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.
Modi and Suvendu paid floral tributes to Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary after stepping onto the stage, reports Times of India.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister JP Nadda, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also attended the ceremony.
The BJP won 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, bringing an end to the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
