Tottenham drew 1-1 with Leeds United in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Mathys Tel scored and conceded a penalty, leaving Spurs two points above the relegation zone on Monday.
Arsenal’s 1-0 win at West Ham earlier in the day gave both sides extra urgency. Tottenham started unevenly but still found a breakthrough in the 50th minute when Tel curled a finish into the top corner from a cleared corner.
Leeds hit back after 69 minutes when Tel’s attempted overhead clearance caught captain Ethan Ampadu in the face. Referee Jarred Gillett allowed play to continue before VAR intervened and awarded a penalty.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck low into the corner to level, taking his season tally to 14 goals.
Tottenham created chances in spells. Richarlison forced a save from Karl Darlow. Rodrigo Bentancur headed wide. Pedro Porro and Conor Gallagher both failed to hit the target from set pieces. Randal Kolo Muani also set up Richarlison, who shot over from close range.
Leeds carried threat on the break. Antonin Kinsky saved from Joe Rodon on the goal-line after a Brenden Aaronson cross. Ao Tanaka also went close before half-time.
Roberto De Zerbi introduced James Maddison late in the game for his first competitive appearance in 12 months after a serious knee injury. Tottenham pushed in stoppage time. Kinsky denied Sean Longstaff’s powerful strike. Leeds also saw a late penalty appeal involving Lukas Nmecha and Maddison turned down.
Leeds secured top-flight safety with the result, while Spurs stayed under pressure near the bottom end of the table.
