A man died in Chattogram’s Banshkhali upazila after being hit on the head with a heavy wooden stick by his expatriate son during a family feud, police said. The victim’s expatriate son and daughter are accused of beating their father.
The incident occurred on Monday at Nidagazi house in Ward No. 3 of Kalipur union under the upazila. The victim, identified as Jafar Ahmed, died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
According to local sources, an altercation broke out between Jafar and his wife over various family issues. The situation escalated when other family members gathered.
At one point, Jafar’s expatriate son, Shawkat, became furious and allegedly struck his father on the head with a heavy wooden stick. Jafar was severely injured and fell to the ground bleeding.
Police said after the son and daughter assaulted and injured Jafar, they themselves rushed him to CMCH. The on-duty doctor there declared him dead. Upon receiving the news, Banshkhali police visited the scene.
Sudhangshu Shekhar Howlader, inspector of Banshkhali Police Station, said primary investigations indicate the beating and murder were triggered by a domestic dispute.
He added that the son and daughter had jointly assaulted their father at around 11pm. Later, Jafar succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at CMCH.
The body of the deceased has been kept in morgue for a post-mortem examination, and process of filing a case is currently underway, the inspector added. Legal action will be taken against those involved once the case is registered.
