A lawsuit has been filed against 193 individuals — including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina — alleging vote rigging and orchestrating a “dummy election” on January 7, 2024, during the Awami League government’s tenure.
Tangail resident Quamrul Hasan, 55, lodged the case at Tangail Judicial Magistrate Court on Monday. The accused include high-profile figures such as former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former agriculture minister Abdur Razzaque, former Tangail-2 MP Tanvir Hasan, former chief election commissioner Kazi Abdul Awal, ex-IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, and former Tangail DC Shahidul Islam.
According to the case statement, Hasina in collusion with others organised a dummy election on January 7, 2024 as per the directives of India.
Quamrul alleged he was physically barred from voting at Bharoi High School by Awami League and Chhatra League activists, who — with police and polling officials’ complicity — reportedly stuffed ballots favouring AL’s boat symbol.
Tangail Bar Association’s former secretary advocate Abu Raihan Khan confirmed the court accepted the case, directing Bhuapur Police Station’s OC to investigate and submit a report.
The next hearing is set for August 13.
