Sheffield United are pushing to complete a permanent transfer for Hamza Choudhury from Leicester City ahead of Tuesday’s home clash with Bolton Wanderers, according to reports in several British media.
The Blades have moved for the midfielder after an injury to first-choice right-back Femi Seriki. The full extent of Seriki’s problem remains unclear, but United are preparing for the worst. Matt Doherty provides cover but is still building match fitness after arriving as a free agent in the summer.
That situation prompted the club to explore options, landing on a familiar face. Choudhury spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Bramall Lane and helped the side reach the play-off final. Leicester, then still in the Premier League, have since suffered successive relegations into League One and are keen to offload his wages.
An effectively free transfer has been agreed. If the remaining formalities are completed smoothly, Choudhury could be available for Tuesday’s match, which kicks off just hours before the 11pm deadline.
The signing would strengthen a key area this season and aid longer-term planning. Joe Rothwell and Jairo Riedewald are both out of contract next summer, Kalvin Phillips is only on loan, and another strong campaign for Sydie Peck would likely intensify speculation about his future.
Speaking after Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Cardiff City, manager Chris Wilder reiterated that the club were “down the line” with a couple of signings. United still hope to add a centre-half before the window closes to complement Japhet Tanganga, Mark McGuinness and Jamal Baptiste, with Rhys Norrington-Davies also capable of operating centrally in a back three.
Wilder has previous experience of working with Choudhury at both Watford and Sheffield United. “I’ve always tracked him, since I saw him play as a 15-year-old for Leicester when they came and played a pre-season game at Northampton,” he told local media.
“I loved his personality, and he’s a player that’s been in and around the team that’s won the Premier League, won the FA Cup, been in Europe, played Champions League football. He’s tasted success and knows how to get out of the division. He’s fitted in seamlessly straightaway and I’m delighted to have him on board,” he added
