Police have arrested Azizur Rahman Aziz, a close associate of Awami League leader Shamim Osman, from the Darshana border area while he was allegedly attempting to flee the country.
The arrest was made on Sunday night in a joint operation by the immigration police and Darshana police in Chuadanga district, confirmed Tejgaon Detective Branch Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rakib Khan on Monday.
“We arrested him with the assistance of local police,” said DC Rakib, adding that Aziz will be produced before court on Monday in connection with an extortion case, for which investigators will seek remand for interrogation.
According to police sources, Aziz, who had been absconding since the fall of the Awami League government, was trying to cross the border into India through Darshana. He faces more than half a dozen cases on charges including extortion, robbery, fraud, and involvement in terrorist activities.
DB police said Aziz is a named accused in an extortion case filed with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station. He will be shown arrested in that case, which is currently being investigated by the Tejgaon division of the Detective Branch.
