Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has alleged that an unqualified individual has been appointed as the Chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC through a “new conspiracy.”
The opposition leader made these remarks on Tuesday afternoon during the second session of the 13th National Parliament and the budget session for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Shafiqur claimed that the previous Sheikh Hasina government had “destroyed” the bank by using S Alam as a tool. He further alleged that efforts are now being made to bring S Alam back into the fold. He warned that if Islami Bank is damaged, the entire banking system of Bangladesh will collapse and public confidence will be completely eroded.
During his speech, Shafiqur also directly challenged Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed regarding allegations of financial impropriety. The challenge follows an earlier statement by the home minister claiming that a group had taken a Tk700 crore loan and spent it on election expenses.
In response, Shafiqur challenged the Home Minister to prove that he had taken a Tk700 crore loan for election purposes. “If you can prove it, I will personally give you a medal,” the Jamaat chief stated.
