A sedition case has been filed in Khulna against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and five others, including her cousin and former Bagerhat-1 MP Sheikh Helal Uddin.
The case was lodged on Monday at Khulna’s Sonadanga Police Station by Detective Police Inspector Bidhan Chandra Roy. Other accused include district Awami League vice-president MM Mujibur Rahman, former MPs Sheikh Salauddin Jewel and SM Kamal Hossain, and Parvez Alam Khan.
The complaint alleges substantial evidence proving the accused conspired to overthrow the government and destabilise the country.
Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Zulfikar Ali confirmed that police are attempting to arrest the accused currently within the country.
According to the FIR, Awami League leader MM Mujibur Rahman was suspiciously detained on April 22 from the city’s Moylapota area. His seized mobile revealed WhatsApp, Telegram, and Zoom communications allegedly plotting the government’s overthrow through groups including Terokhada Upazila Awami League, Bangabandhu’s Bangladesh, Bijoy Ekattor, and Joy Bangla Amar Pran.
Following this, Khulna Metropolitan Police sought Home Ministry approval via the District Administration to file the sedition case, receiving clearance on August 4.
Though MM Mujibur Rahman secured bail after arrest, he is currently absconding, with police actively pursuing his re-arrest.
