A 15-year-old boy was found dead in the Kumar River in Magura on Monday morning, approximately 10 hours after he drowned while attempting to take a selfie.

The deceased, identified as Dipto, was a class VIII student at Magura Model Government High School. He lived with his mother in the Metanipara area, while his father works in Canada, according to Ayub Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Magura Police Station.

Witnesses reported that Dipto was near the Water Development Board bridge on Dhaka Road, standing by the railing to take a selfie when he lost his balance and fell into the river. Despite a prompt rescue operation launched by the Magura Fire Service and Civil Defence team, efforts were delayed due to a sudden power outage, as reported by a fire service official.

Local residents eventually found Dipto’s body in the river early Monday morning.

In a separate incident, a one-and-a-half-year-old child named Aryan drowned in a pond while playing near his home in Chuadanga on Monday. The incident took place around 9 a.m. in the Hijalgari village of Sadar upazila. Aryan was the son of Khatib Mia, a resident of the village.
