The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant shift in the organisation’s leadership. Gupta, previously the Chief Executive for Sports and Live Experiences at Indian broadcaster JioStar, becomes the ICC’s seventh CEO, succeeding Geoff Allardice, who stepped down in January after four years in the role.
The appointment follows a global search that drew over 2,500 applications from 25 countries, highlighting the increasing prestige and influence of the position.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah welcomed Gupta’s appointment, saying: “He brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation, which will be invaluable for the ICC.”
In his first statement as CEO, Gupta expressed optimism about the future of cricket amid rapid global growth and innovation.
“These are exciting times for the sport as marquee events grow in stature, commercial avenues widen and opportunities such as the women’s game scale in popularity,” he said.
He also emphasised the importance of cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the expanding role of technology: “Cricket’s inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid acceleration of technology deployment and adoption could act as force-multipliers for the cricket movement around the world.”
Gupta’s appointment signals a new chapter for the ICC as it looks to expand the game’s global footprint and commercial potential in the years ahead.
