Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals have completed a blockbuster trade that reshapes both squads ahead of IPL 2026. Sanju Samson has officially joined CSK, while Ravindra Jadeja returns to RR after 14 years in one of the league’s biggest swap deals.
CSK had long seen Samson as MS Dhoni’s successor and wanted a reliable Indian wicketkeeper-batter to strengthen the top order. They had chased him since the end of IPL 2025. Rajasthan, however, drove a hard bargain. They refused an all-cash deal and pushed for Jadeja, who starred for them in the early years and helped win the inaugural IPL title in 2008.
Jadeja leaves CSK as a franchise legend after scoring more than 2,300 runs and taking over 150 wickets. RR also secured Sam Curran for INR 2.4 crore, giving them two proven all-rounders to lift their middle order.
For CSK, Samson fits perfectly at number three. Their top five looks set with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ayush Mhatre opening, Samson at three, Dewald Brevis at four and Shivam Dube at five. The franchise is expected to release Rahul Tripathi, Vijay Shankar and Deepak Hooda. They will now target a middle-order batter and an all-rounder for positions six and seven. If MS Dhoni plays again, he may bat at eight.
Cameron Green is one possible target. If CSK secure him in the auction, fitting him into the batting order could be a challenge since the top is already packed. Still, the team aims to add an overseas batter and a strong all-rounder.
The Samson–Jadeja swap gives both teams a fresh look. CSK gain a long-term leader and top-order anchor, while RR rebuild their middle order with Jadeja and Curran as they prepare for a new IPL cycle.
