Egypt have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Djibouti 3-0 in Casablanca. The victory confirmed their top spot in Group A with one match still to play.
Mohamed Salah scored twice for Egypt, while Ibrahim Adel added the third goal. The Liverpool forward has now scored nine goals in Egypt’s qualifying campaign, which began two years ago.
With this win, Egypt became the third African nation to qualify for the 2026 finals, joining Morocco and Tunisia. Egypt have appeared in three previous World Cups but missed out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.
In other matches, Ghana crushed the Central African Republic 5-0 in Meknes. Thomas Partey opened the scoring, followed by goals from Mohammed Salisu, Alexander Djiku, captain Jordan Ayew, and Kamaldeen Sulemana. Ghana now need only one point from their final home match against Comoros to qualify.
Cape Verde drew 3-3 with Libya in Tripoli after trailing 2-0 early in the match. The result moved them closer to a first-ever World Cup appearance. The Blue Sharks, as they are known, will qualify if they beat Eswatini at home on Monday.
Cape Verde lead Group D with 20 points, two ahead of Cameroon. Cameroon, who have played in a record eight World Cups, beat Mauritius 2-0 in Saint-Pierre with Bryan Mbeumo among the scorers.
Cameroon must defeat Angola at home in their final game to keep their qualification hopes alive. If they finish second, they will aim to be among the four best runners-up to enter the African playoffs in November.
The playoff winners will advance to an intercontinental round next March, where two more World Cup spots will be decided.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
