Bangladeshi rock music has lost one of its distinctive voices with the passing of vocalist Ahrar Masud Diep, best known for his work with the bands Rustoff, Eclipse and Calypso. He was also a memorable contestant in DRockstars 2007, where he performed with Eclipse and earned recognition for his soaring high-pitch vocals and command over technically demanding songs.
Diep passed away on September 15 and was laid to rest at Shaheen Graveyard, Bangladesh Air Force Base, Bashar, following his janaza prayers. The news has left fans, friends and fellow musicians in shock and mourning.
His band Rustoff confirmed the loss in a heartfelt statement: “It is impossible to conjure up the right words – or any words at all – at such a tragic and shocking moment. We are beyond heartbroken and in a state of disbelief at the news of our beloved vocalist, friend, and brother – Ahrar Masud Diep – who passed away last night. Our hearts and prayers are with his family, friends and loved ones. Rest in peace, Diep. You will be forever missed.”
Acclaimed singer Elita Karim recalled campus memories with him at North South University, writing on her Facebook post: “Shocked and heartbroken. Ahrar Masud Diep, a musician, a father and an NSU alumni, passed away a while ago. So many memories from our Banani campus. May you rest in peace.”
Tributes and condolences have poured in from across the music fraternity. Fellow Drockstars 2007 finalists Powersurge remembered Diep’s unmatched talent on social media posts. Arbovirus, Chirkutt and other musicians also expressed their grief.
From his early days, performing Malmsteen and Dream Theater covers to making his mark on Bangladesh’s rock scene with Eclipse and Rustoff, Diep was admired for both his vocal range and his humility. His sudden passing leaves behind a legacy of music, memories and inspiration for those who knew him and loved his art.
