Russia has handed over 30000 tonnes of Muriate of Potash (MOP) fertiliser to Bangladesh as a state gift channelled through the World Food Programme (WFP).
The fertiliser is supplied by Uralchem Group, Russia’s major fertiliser producer, according to the press release.
A handover ceremony took place at the BARC Auditorium in Dhaka.
Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, who also serves as Agriculture Adviser to the Ministry attended as chief guest. Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin joined the event as special guest. Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian presided the event.
Speaking at the event, Adviser Jahangir Alam said the global supply of food and fertiliser has become increasingly difficult.
He noted that climate pressures, volatile international markets, and global crises are already affecting agriculture. He stressed that international cooperation now matters more than ever.
The adviser also stated that Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation holds 1.035 million tonnes of fertiliser stock, excluding urea. This marks the highest stock level since Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) was founded in 1961.
He added that the interim government has made notable progress in the agricultural sector despite the strained global situation.
