Como 1907 secured a first-ever place in the UEFA Champions League after a 4-1 win over US Cremonese on Serie A’s final day, while AC Milan crashed out of the top four with a 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari Calcio.
Cesc Fabregas completed a remarkable rise with Como. The club played in Serie D in 2019. Now they will play Champions League football for the first time in their 119-year history. Como finished fourth, two points behind AS Roma.
Roma sealed third place with a 2-0 win over Hellas Verona FC. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini guided the club back into Europe’s top competition for the first time since 2019.
Milan started strongly at San Siro when Alexis Saelemaekers scored in the second minute. But Cagliari hit back through Gennaro Borrelli and Juan Rodriguez. The defeat dropped Milan to fifth place and into the Europa League spots.
The pressure inside San Siro grew throughout the afternoon. Fans booed the team and protested against owners RedBird Capital Partners before and after the match. Christian Pulisic and his team-mates ended the season one point behind Como.
Juventus FC also missed out on the Champions League after a 2-2 draw with Torino FC in a delayed Turin derby. Kick-off started more than an hour late after clashes between supporters outside the stadium left one Juventus fan in hospital.
Dusan Vlahovic gave Juventus an early lead. However, the draw left Luciano Spalletti’s side sixth in the table and heading for the Europa League.
Como’s victory also sent Cremonese down to Serie B. Three Cremonese players received red cards in a chaotic second half. US Lecce stayed up with a 1-0 win over Genoa CFC.
