Bangladesh Railway has introduced a three-tier security system to stop passengers from travelling on train roofs during the Eid-ul-Adha rush, as thousands begin leaving Dhaka for their hometowns.
Kamalapur Railway Station Manager Kabir Hossain shared the information with reporters on Friday morning.
He said passenger pressure on trains has started rising gradually ahead of Eid, although crowds remained manageable during the early days of ticket sales.
“People are travelling home for Eid. Since morning, 11 intercity trains have left this station,” he said.
Kabir Hossain said no one without a valid ticket would be allowed to enter the station premises. He added that railway authorities had strengthened security in three layers to prevent dangerous roof travel on trains.
He also urged passengers not to buy tickets from black market operators or brokers.
“Law enforcement agencies will remain alert so that no ticket syndicate can continue such activities,” he said.
The station manager said railway authorities were issuing standing tickets equal to 25 per cent of the lowest-class seat capacity following requests from passengers.
“We are providing around 45,000 seat tickets. Including standing tickets, nearly 70,000 tickets will be issued,” he said.
Kabir Hossain also said 43 pairs of intercity trains and 23 pairs of commuter trains — a total of 66 pairs — would operate from Saturday to handle the growing Eid travel pressure.
