Emma Raducanu produced one of her most impressive performances since her breakthrough Grand Slam triumph in 2021, defeating four-time major winner Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the Washington Open on Thursday.
In their first-ever meeting, Raducanu showed composure and tactical clarity, outplaying the former world number one on the hard courts of the US capital. The 21-year-old Briton now faces a formidable test in the last eight against Maria Sakkari, the former world number three from Greece, who upset second seed Emma Navarro in straight sets.
“I thought it was going to be a really difficult match,” Raducanu told Sky Sports after the victory. “Naomi’s won four slams, she’s been world number one, won Masters. She’s so dangerous and on the hard courts, I think she’s particularly comfortable.
“I knew I was going to have to play well and manage my own service games, which I’m really proud of how I did. I was making some inroads in her service game after I got used to it a little bit. I’m really pleased with how I handled the ball speed and conditions here in DC.”
Raducanu’s sharp form this week means she will reclaim the British number one ranking from Katie Boulter when the WTA rankings are updated on Monday. In addition to her singles run, she has also made the women’s doubles semi-finals, partnering Wimbledon 2022 champion Elena Rybakina.
Meanwhile, Venus Williams’ return to competition after a 16-month injury absence came to an end with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Poland’s Magdalena Frech, the tournament’s fifth seed. Despite the loss, the 45-year-old made history earlier in the week by becoming the oldest player to win a WTA singles match since 2004, following her opening-round victory over Peyton Stearns.
Raducanu’s resurgence comes as a welcome sign for British tennis fans ahead of the summer hard court swing, with her confidence and consistency seemingly returning at just the right time.
