PSV Eindhoven came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday and claim the Johan Cruyff Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser to the Dutch football season.
The Dutch champions were made to work for their win at the Philips Stadium, with American fullback Sergiño Dest scoring the decisive goal in the 84th minute. Just six minutes earlier, an own goal from Eagles defender Gerrit Nauber had pulled PSV level.
Cup winners Go Ahead Eagles had taken the lead in the 35th minute when Mathis Suray tucked away a low cross from left-back Dean James to stun the home crowd.
Go Ahead, who lifted their first-ever KNVB Cup in April after a dramatic penalty shootout win over AZ Alkmaar, looked poised for another upset until the late PSV turnaround.
The victory adds another trophy to PSV’s cabinet following their Eredivisie title triumph last season, as Peter Bosz’s side begin the new campaign on a winning note.
