Ever thought of a phone that could act as a PSP as well? The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play was the first concept phone to do just that. It is also considered the first prototype of the now-famous PSP series.
Released in February 2011, the Xperia Play stood out like a sore thumb among smartphones of its time. It featured a 4-inch display with a handful of buttons underneath for calls, navigation, and the home screen. The 5MP camera was impressive for those days, but some of its specifications, like 512MB of RAM and a 1500mAh battery, struggled to meet the demands of heavy use.
The phone’s main attraction, however, lay beneath its surface. Sliding it from the side revealed a miniature PlayStation-style controller with all the necessary buttons. While the phone could handle lighter games, the limited RAM often caused lag, preventing games from running as smoothly as intended.
There were a handful of games that were available for this phone. With the Google Play Store not yet widely accessible, many users downloaded games from WAP sites like Phoneky and Zedge. However, these games were not compatible with the PSP mode. The phone also supported cartridges, which were inserted next to the battery compartment, though the overall library remained small.
Despite these limitations, the Xperia Play found a niche among gaming enthusiasts. For those who could not afford a full PlayStation or gaming console, this phone offered a compact alternative to pass the time, often serving as a secondary device for casual gaming.
