Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has said police would not hesitate to carry out crossfire operations if the government approves.

The IGP made the remarks on Monday morning while speaking at the inauguration of the “Community Islamic Bank System” in Chawkbazar, Old Dhaka.

Stressing that freedom does not mean people can do whatever they wish, he urged citizens not to take the law into their own hands. He also said that police are essential for maintaining peace and order in society.

It was not right to place the blame on police for every incident, he added.

The police chief alleged that, in addition to members of the ousted Awami League, some police personnel had been involved in the drug trafficking in the country. He said at least 27 police members had been dismissed over the past two months.
