Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) has urged the public not to be misled by social media rumours claiming a complete shutdown of gas supply for four days, clarifying that emergency maintenance at an LNG terminal may cause temporary low pressure in some areas instead.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, Petrobangla added that a vested quarter has been deliberately fabricating photocards of various news media outlets to spread rumours on social media and trigger public panic regarding a total gas outage.

Clarifying the situation, Petrobangla explained that regasification operations at the Summit LNG terminal – one of the two floating LNG terminals located in Moheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar – have been suspended for urgent maintenance work.

As a result, daily gas supply across the country may decrease from the current 2,570 million cubic feet to 2,250 million cubic feet over the next four days.

The corporation reassured consumers that gas supply will not be completely cut off, though some areas may experience a temporary reduction in supply and low pressure.

Petrobangla requested citizens not to pay heed to any false reports or rumours.
