Bangladesh’s per capita income for the fiscal year 2024-25 has increased to $2,769, a slight rise from last year’s $2,738, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury told the parliament on Monday.

According to the latest official statistics from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, per capita income has been hovering at the same level over the last few years—$2,749 in 2022-23, $2,738 in 2023-24, and now $2,769.

The Finance Minister pointed out that job creation is central to the government’s approach. By expanding employment in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, IT, agriculture, and small enterprises, the government aims to increase household incomes, ultimately contributing to per capita income growth.

Additionally, the government is facilitating financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly focusing on empowering women and youth entrepreneurs. Efforts are also being made to boost exports and open new international markets, with the goal of increasing foreign exchange earnings.

Furthermore, skills development for expatriate workers and promoting legal remittances are key aspects of the plan.

The government is also strengthening agriculture, rural infrastructure, and small agricultural businesses to improve incomes in rural areas, where a large portion of the population resides. These measures are expected to have a positive impact on both rural and national economies.

Minister Chowdhury emphasised that these steps are designed to improve the quality of life for Bangladeshis, reduce unemployment, and increase production and investment, all while protecting citizens’ purchasing power.

The government’s strategy, he noted, will lead to sustained economic growth and a gradual rise in per capita income.
