A new platform dedicated to promoting scientific, ethical and responsible bird keeping in Bangladesh has officially begun its journey.
Named Pakhi (Platform for Avian Knowledge, Care and Innovation), the initiative was launched through an event titled Beyond the Cage – Chapter One: An Evening with Bangladesh’s Bird Keepers, organised by Fur & Feather Bangladesh Limited.
Held on Friday (31 July) at Fiori Coffee & Bakery in Uttara, Dhaka, the event brought together bird keepers, bird enthusiasts, researchers and stakeholders from across the country.
Organisers presented their long-term vision of transforming Bangladesh’s avian sector into a science-based, well-organised and sustainable industry.
The chief guest was Professor Dr Mohammad Shamsul Alam Bhuiyan of the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics at Bangladesh Agricultural University.
Avian medicine specialist Dr Sifat E Rabbani attended as the special guest.
During the event, Samina Islam, chairperson of Roots Cineclub in Sirajganj, received the Pakhibondhu Honour 2026 in recognition of her long-standing contributions to environmental conservation, culture and bird preservation.
Receiving the award, an emotional Samina Islam said, “I belong to the world of cinema, but I have had a deep affection for birds since childhood. I am truly honoured to receive the Pakhibondhu Honour. I sincerely thank the organisers and extend my love to everyone who has come together out of their passion for birds.”
Following the award ceremony, organisers outlined the objectives, organisational structure, community engagement strategy and future plans for the Pakhi platform.
They also presented a roadmap for developing a modern bird-focused ecosystem in Bangladesh by integrating bird care, veterinary services, research, education, ethical breeding and innovation.
According to the organisers, Beyond the Cage is more than a one-off event.
It is intended to become a regular platform for knowledge-sharing, collaboration and experience exchange among stakeholders in Bangladesh’s bird community, while Pakhi aims to strengthen responsible bird keeping and related research across the country.
