More than 3 million taxpayers have submitted income tax returns online (e-returns) in the current fiscal year, while nearly 4.5 million taxpayers have registered on the e-return system, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) said.
The NBR confirmed the information in a press release on Tuesday.
Under a special order of the National Board of Revenue, online submission of income tax returns has been made mandatory for all taxpayers.
The exemption applies to senior citizens aged 65 and above, physically challenged or special-needs taxpayers, Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, legal representatives of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed inaugurated the e-return process for the 2025–26 fiscal year through the website www.etaxnbr.gov.bd on 4 August, 2025.
Taxpayers said that 251,784 people submitted e-returns in August, 301,032 in September, 454,067 in October, 1,040,472 in November and around 1 million taxpayers so far in December. During the same period last year, 1,002,289 taxpayers submitted e-returns.
The government has already extended the deadline for e-return submission to 31 January, 2026. The National Board of Revenue expects that more than 4 million taxpayers will submit e-returns within the extended time.
Although online return submission is not mandatory for taxpayers residing abroad, those who send their passport, national identity card and email address to [email protected] are being sent an OTP and a registration link by email. Through this process, taxpayers living abroad can easily submit their returns online.
Taxpayers can enter details of their income, expenditure, assets and liabilities into the e-return system from home and pay taxes through debit or credit cards, internet banking or mobile financial services. The system automatically generates an acknowledgement slip and income tax certificate.
To make the e-return process easier and hassle-free, the National Board of Revenue has provided training to taxpayers, lawyers, chartered accountants and cost and management accountants.
In addition, taxpayers are receiving support through the call centre at 09643 71 71 71, the eTax Service option on the website, and e-return help desks across the country.
The National Board of Revenue has urged all taxpayers to submit their income tax returns for the 2025–26 fiscal year through the e-return system by 31 January, 2026.
