Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur is suffering from short-term memory loss, according to the party’s General Secretary Rashed Khan.
He shared this information with journalists after visiting Nur’s physical condition at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital on Saturday afternoon.
Rashed Khan said, “Nur is forgetting many things. His nose is still bleeding. He cannot finish his sentences, speaking incoherently. Even if he takes medicine two hours ago, he forgets later. Sometimes he falls asleep while talking. He cannot stand; there is no balance in his body. His condition is still not out of danger.”
He alleged that due to government negligence and political vendetta, his physical condition could deteriorate further.
He claimed that although the government has assured proper treatment abroad, a certain quarter is obstructing its implementation.
Rashed also asserted that Gono Odhikar Parishad has no involvement in the vandalism and arson carried out at Jatiya Party’s (JaPa) central office. He said, “We had a solidarity rally at Shahbag, where over 30 political parties participated. After the rally, we all returned to the office. After that, I do not know who attacked JaPa’s office. Our party believes in democratic movements.”
He further stated, “The JaPa general secretary, Shamim Haider Patwari, has made false allegations. He is a collaborator of fascism and has demanded a ban on Gono Odhikar Parishad. How does he have the audacity?”
Earlier, on Friday evening, Jatiya Party’s central office in Kakrail was set on fire and vandalised. Jatiya Party has blamed the Gono Odhikar Parishad for the attack.
Previously, on the evening of August 29, after a clash between JaPa and Gono Odhikar Parishad, around 9:30opm, Gono Odhikar Parishad activists held a torch procession. Later, when the party’s leaders went to the Bijoynagar office for a briefing, law enforcement charged with them batons, alleged General Secretary Rashed Khan.
Party President Nurul Haque Nur, seriously injured in the attack by law enforcement, is currently undergoing treatment at DMCH hospital.
The next day, on August 30, around 6:30pm, JaPa’s central office was vandalised and set on fire. Subsequently, a large number of law enforcement members were deployed in the area.
That afternoon, a group of protesters marched from the Kakrail intersection towards the JaPa office. After a while, they threw bricks and stones at the office and set fire to the street. Later, they entered the office, vandalised it, set it on fire, and brought out chairs and tables to burn.
At that time, law enforcement used baton charges and water cannons to disperse the protesters.
