Jimmy Neesham has taken official leave from New Zealand’s India tour to stay with Rajshahi Warriors in the Bangladesh Premier League, a decision confirmed this week ahead of the January 23 final.
The Kiwi all-rounder joined Rajshahi with plans to leave after the group stage. The India tour, however, clashed directly with the business end of the BPL.
New Zealand play their first T20 against India on January 21. The BPL final falls just two days later, forcing Neesham to choose between country duty and club commitment.
Rajshahi head coach Hannan Sarkar made the first move. He asked Neesham to explore every possible option to remain available until the end of the tournament.
Neesham responded with intent rather than hesitation. He approached New Zealand Cricket and secured a no-objection certificate to stay until January 23.
Hannan confirmed the story himself on social media. “Even though there is national duty, Neesham will stay with Rajshahi Warriors until the end of the BPL,” he wrote, setting the tone.
The coach explained how the decision took shape. “When I requested him to see if there was any way he could stay, Neesham showed interest straight away.” That interest mattered.
Hannan also acknowledged the reality of international cricket. “It wasn’t just about willingness. At the end of the day, it was national duty, and he had to go.” That balance shaped the outcome.
Rajshahi made their case clearly. “We all knew how important a player like Neesham is for us in that position,” Hannan said. The club pushed where it could.
The rest fell on the player. “Neesham handled everything himself, from speaking to his board to arranging the NOC,” Hannan added. Professionalism met commitment.
The plan now stands firm. “If Rajshahi reach the final, he will play that match and then leave,” Hannan said. No drama, just clarity.
For Rajshahi, this decision strengthens belief. For Neesham, it shows loyalty without burning bridges.
The BPL now gets his full focus. India can wait a little longer.
