National Citizen Party (NCP) General Secretary Akhtar Hossain has raised concerns about his party’s participation in the upcoming national elections, stating that they would be unlikely to join without a new constitution.
“Should the election be held based on a new constitution formulated through a constituent assembly, the NCP will join the polls at any time,” he stated.
Akhtar made these comments during a press conference held at the NCP’s central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka, on Saturday.
The NCP leader also expressed concerns regarding the BNP’s stance on the July Accord and the new constitution. He noted, “The BNP has raised objections to the July Accord and the new constitution, creating uncertainty about their commitment to reforms, as evidenced by the statements of their leaders.”
He further warned, “If the government fails to implement the new constitution and the July Accord, fascism may rise once again. We cannot accept this in a new Bangladesh, which was founded at the cost of thousands of lives.”
Regarding the potential timing of the elections, Akhtar suggested that the elections could take place in February or even sooner. He stressed, “The type of election needs to be made clear to the nation. The public must know what kind of voting process will be in place.”
He also raised concerns about leaving reform proposals to the next parliament, questioning whether they would be implemented. “This is why we have demanded a new constitution,” he said.
Akhtar concluded by questioning the delay in implementing the reform proposals, calling for swift action.
