The National Citizen Party (NCP) has accused Habiganj Deputy Commissioner Dr Md Faridur Rahman of aligning with the fascist Awami League after the party has been denied permission to hold a rally at the Habiganj Central Shaheed Minar.

At a press conference held on Wednesday night at the NCP’s Sadar Upazila office, Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal, convener of the party’s July March (Padayatra) Implementation Committee, claimed the DC’s decision was politically motivated.

“It seems the DC Faridur doesn’t want our programme to proceed smoothly. He denied us permission in a cold and calculated manner, possibly at someone’s behest,” Kamal said.

He further alleged that the DC was acting in support of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, calling him a “friend of the fascist Sheikh Hasina”.

The NCP leader said that after Sheikh Hasina fled, many officials have been transferred or have gone to jail but some government officials were still working covertly for the Awami League.

In response, officials from the Habiganj District Administration said the Shaheed Minar grounds are designated as a reserved area.

Since the proposed event was scheduled for a working day, authorities feared it might disrupt court and administrative activities.

The NCP has relocated its rally to the municipality premises and is set to hold the event Thursday afternoon as part of its month-long July March programme.
