Different socio cultural organization and educational institutions across Bangladesh will celebrate the 126th birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam, our National Poet. People across the country honoring his legacy as a fearless writer who spoke out against social injustice, religious intolerance and British colonial rule.

Nazrul was born on May 24, 1899, in Churulia village of Indian West Bengal state’s Bardhaman district. He became known as the “Rebel Poet” for his powerful poems, songs, and essays that promoted equality, love, and freedom.Although he was declared the National Poet on May 24, 1972, the day he arrived in Bangladesh, this year’s celebration is the first officially recognized by the state. A gazette issued on January 2 by the Interim Government confirmed his status as “National Poet” formally. Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Saturday called Kazi Nazrul Islam the “poet of rebellion and humanity,” saying he remains a shining star in Bengali literature.
In a message marking Nazrul’s 126th birth anniversary, he paid deep respect to the legendary poet’s memory. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs, along with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and district administrations , have arranged cultural events across the country, including grand events in Dhaka and Cumilla.
The main celebration will take place in Cumilla from May 25, with a three-day program under the theme “Legacy of Kazi Nazrul in the 2024 People’s Uprising.” The event will be held at Cumilla District Shilpakala Academy, where Cultural Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki will attend as chief guest.
