A police constable named Abul Kalam was reportedly beaten, leaving his hands and legs broken and a tendon in one leg severed, for opposing drug sales in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj.

The incident took place at around 11pm on Thursday in the Uttor Masabo area of Tarabo Municipality under the upazila. The injured Abul Kalam is a member of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn).

According to local sources, Constable Abul Kalam had been working for some time to curb drug peddling in the Masabo area of Tarabo Municipality. In connection with his anti-drug efforts, he handed over two local drug dealers, identified as Shahadat and Emdadul, to the police. Following their arrest, Shahjalal, the younger brother of drug dealer Shahadat, had been repeatedly issuing threats to Abul Kalam.

On Thursday night, Shahjalal called Abul Kalam over the phone and summoned him to a secluded beel (marshland). Upon his arrival, Shahjalal along with 10 to 15 associates tortured Abul Kalam, broke his hands and legs, and severed his leg tendon.

Hearing his cries for help, nearby residents rushed to the scene, causing the assailants to flee. Abul Kalam was rescued and initially admitted to a local private hospital, before being transferred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital for treatment.

When contacted, AHM Salahuddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rupganj Police Station, said, “I have heard about the incident. Action will be taken according to the investigation upon receiving a complaint.”
