Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has strongly criticised the “Proportional Representation (PR) Movement” initiated by Jamaat-e-Islami, calling it a calculated political deception.
He argued that the movement was deliberately designed to undermine the National Consensus Commission’s reform process and divert attention from the critical issue of state and constitutional restructuring following the people’s uprising.
In a Facebook post made on Sunday, Nahid emphasised that the demand for an Upper House based on proportional representation of votes was intended as a constitutional safeguard.
He noted that the core objective was to establish a legal framework for the July Charter through a broad-based national consensus.
However, he accused Jamaat and its allies of hijacking the reform agenda, reducing it to a technical PR issue, and using it as a bargaining tool for their narrow political interests. Nahid claimed that Jamaat’s true motive was never reform but political manipulation.
He further stated that Jamaat-e-Islami had never engaged in the reform discourse, offering no substantive proposals, constitutional vision, or commitment to a democratic republic before or after the July Uprising.
The party’s sudden endorsement of reform within the Consensus Commission, he claimed, was merely a tactical infiltration aimed at political sabotage.
Nahid concluded by stating that the people of Bangladesh have now recognised this deception and will no longer be misled by false reformists. He declared that neither the Almighty nor the sovereign people would allow dishonest and opportunistic forces to rule again.
