A murder accused on a three-day police remand has escaped from the Jatrabari Police Station in the capital.
The accused, identified as Mitu Akter, cleverly fled custody on Thursday morning, which was the final day of her remand. She was scheduled to be presented before a court in the afternoon.
An official from the Wari Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the escape on Thursday evening.
The official said that Akter managed to unlock a gate and flee the premises in the morning. He explained that female accused are not put in handcuffs, and she exploited this opportunity to walk out of the police station.
Following the incident, five personnel have been suspended on charges of negligence of duty.
An operation is currently underway to rearrest the escaped accused.
