A woman and her two daughters were killed early Monday when a Nor’wester struck Melandah upazila of Jamalpur, uprooting a tree that collapsed onto their home.
The deceased were identified as Khuki Begum, 65, wife of Gani Mandal in Dagi area, and their daughters Farida Akhter, 40, and Fateh Akhter, 37.
Melandah Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jinnatul Ara told UNB that the storm hit Purba Dagi village around 3:30am, toppling a large mahogany tree beside the victims’ tin‑shed house. The tree crashed onto the structure while the family was asleep, killing all three on the spot, she added.
Local residents and fire service officials said strong winds and gusts swept through the area late at night, making immediate rescue efforts impossible. Inclement weather hampered access until morning, police said.
Later, police and fire service personnel, assisted by villagers, recovered the bodies from under the debris.
UNO Jinnatul said the victims’ family will receive Tk75,000 in government assistance.
