Police have recovered the body of a class five-student a day after she went missing in Bandar Upazila of Narayanganj, sparking grief and anger in the area.
Residents spotted her body in the early hours of Monday during the Fajr prayer time in the courtyard of a neighbouring house belonging to the late Anwar Hossain and informed police.
Alifa, 13, was the daughter of an auto-rickshaw driver in Narayanganj City Corporation’s Ward 20.
According to police and family members, Alifa went missing on Sunday afternoon, prompting relatives and locals to search for her, including making announcements through mosque loudspeakers.
Police later recovered the body and sent it to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Law enforcers said they suspect the girl was assaulted before being killed, adding that the exact cause of death would be determined after the autopsy.
The incident has cast a pall of mourning over the locality, with the victim’s family and residents demanding exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Police said an investigation is under way and legal action will be taken based on the findings.
