Lionel Messi made history with two goals as Inter Miami beat Atletico de San Luis 4-2 in their opening Leagues Cup match on Thursday.
The Argentine star is now the top scorer in Leagues Cup history with 14 goals. He reached the mark after scoring twice in the first half.
Atletico de San Luis took an early lead. Messi quickly brought Miami level in the 11th minute after finishing a pass from Noah Allen.
Telasco Segovia then put Inter Miami ahead before Messi struck again just before the break. Once again, Allen provided the assist as Messi finished calmly to give his side more control.
Messi also helped create Miami’s fourth goal. His corner found Micael, who scored before half time to complete a strong first half for the home side.
The match was Messi’s first start since helping Argentina finish as runners up at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It was also his second appearance since returning from international duty.
Inter Miami opened their Leagues Cup campaign with an important win and will now face Monterrey in their next group match on Sunday.
The Leagues Cup is an annual tournament that brings together clubs from Major League Soccer and Mexico’s Liga MX. This year’s competition features 18 teams from each league competing for the title.
