After making waves on the international festival circuit, Mehazabien Chowdhury is set for a long-awaited return to Bangladeshi theatres with ‘Saba’, directed by Maksud Hossain.
The film opens nationwide on September 26, just in time for the Durga festivities.
At its heart, Saba tells the moving story of a young woman navigating the weight of responsibility in a middle-class urban household. Following her father’s death, Saba dedicates her life to caring for her mother, Shirin, who has been confined to a wheelchair since a tragic accident. When Shirin suffers a sudden heart attack and requires life-saving surgery, Saba finds herself at a breaking point; caught between love, sacrifice and the desperate fight to protect her only family.
The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 and has since been showcased at a string of major festivals, including Busan, Red Sea, Gothenburg, Sydney and Raindance, earning acclaim for its emotional storytelling and performances.
Starring alongside Mehazabien are Mostafa Monwar and Rokeya Prachy, whose roles add further depth to this intimate yet universal tale of resilience and hope.
