National Award-winning actor Manoj Bajpayee is set to portray Mahatma Gandhi in an upcoming film directed by Sudhir Mishra. The yet-to-be-titled project will explore a little-known 21-day chapter in India’s freedom struggle.
According to The Hindu, Mishra and filmmaker Anubhav Sinha have joined forces for the project, with Sinha producing it through his production house, Benaras Media Works. NH Studioz will present the film.
Mishra, known for films such as Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Dharavi and Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin, will direct the film. Saurabh Shukla is also part of the ensemble cast.
The story focuses on the 21 days in Gandhi’s life during India’s transition to independence. At a time when the country was moving towards freedom and Delhi was emerging as the centre of power, Gandhi made an unexpected choice — he walked away.
Mishra said the decision did not represent a retreat. Instead, Gandhi reinvented himself and began redefining his path.
“While history books record the surface events of that era, this story explores what lay beneath that famous choice and will depict the personal journey of a leader redefining his path,” Mishra said in a statement.
The filmmaker added that the film will examine the personal journey behind Gandhi’s decision and shed light on the lesser-known chapter of his life.
