A man was killed after being electrocuted while allegedly attempting to steal electrical cables from a utility pole in the Sabujbagh area of the capital on Tuesday morning.
The deceased, identified as Mobarak Hossain,45, was recovered from beside a public toilet near Basabo playground around 11:30am. Police later sent the body to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Sabujbagh Police Sub-Inspector Nor Uttam Biswas said preliminary findings suggest that the man died from electrocution while trying to cut and steal power cables.
The victim’s nephew, Suman Islam, said Mobarak was originally from Dumuria village under Homna upazila in Cumilla district. He had been living with his wife and four children in a rented house in South Basabo. According to him, Mobarak was unemployed and struggled with drug addiction.
Police said an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
