Mahin Sarkar, general secretary (GS) candidate from the independent ‘Shomonnito Shikkharthi Songshod’ panel, has withdrawn from the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections and declared his support for a rival contender.

At a press conference helon Friday, Mahin, who was recently expelled as joint member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), announced his decision to step aside and support Abu Bakr Majumder, the GS candidate from the Anti-Discrimination Student Parliament panel, backed by the Bangladesh Democratic Students’ Council.

“There is a need for unity among progressive forces in student politics at Dhaka University,” Mahin said. “I believe Abu Bakr Majumder will bring accountable leadership to the student body.”

He called on students to support Abu Bakr in the polls, adding that while his name will remain on the ballot due to the absence of a formal withdrawal process, he is no longer participating in the electoral race.

Earlier, just hours after announcing his candidacy for the DUCSU GS post, Mahin was expelled from the NCP over allegations of “serious breach of discipline.”
