A local BNP leader was brutally killed after a group of assailants attacked him at a tea stall in Bagerhat town on Friday evening over previous dispute.
The deceased ASM Hayat Uddin, 43, son of Sheikh Nizam Uddin of Uttar Harikhali, was a former member of the town’s BNP committee and had recently contested for the position of organising secretary during the party’s biannual council.
Prior to this, he was actively involved in the party’s student and youth wings. Local residents said Hayat also introduced himself as a staff correspondent of daily Bhorer Chetona.
Bagerhat Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mahmud-ul-Hasan said that the incident occurred around 6:30pm on Friday at the intersection in Uttar Harikhali.
Quoting locals the OC said Hayat was sitting alone at the tea stall when the attackers, comprising four or five individuals, on two motorcycles, attacked him with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene, leaving him severely injured.
Hayat was promptly taken to the 250-bed district hospital in Bagerhat by locals, but as his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival, the official said. The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Mahmud said that they are investigating the incident and suspect the attack may be related to an earlier dispute. They will disclosed further details after investigation, he added.
