Law Minister Mohammad Asaduzzaman on Monday said the government remains committed to providing free legal assistance to oppressed and underprivileged people.
He made the remarks in Monday morning while inaugurating a mobile legal aid camp at Korail slum in the capital, marking National Legal Aid Day.
During the programme, the minister offered legal advice to residents and urged people to move away from the culture of filing false cases.
He also asked citizens to inform the Ministry of Law if any innocent person is deprived of legal services.
The initiative aims to deliver legal support at the doorstep of poor and disadvantaged people with financial assistance from the German government and support from the Law Ministry.
Victims can seek legal help by calling the hotline number 16699.
The minister said “Those who face injustice but cannot afford to appoint a lawyer will receive assistance through the hotline.”
Speaking at another mobile legal aid camp inauguration in Banani, he reiterated his call to abandon the practice of filing false cases. He again stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring free legal support for victims in that event.
Asaduzzaman said “If anyone is denied legal aid services, the matter should be reported to the ministry.”
He also encouraged people to try to resolve disputes through legal aid mechanisms before going to court.
The minister assured that victims of sexual harassment who are unable to approach the court can also receive legal support through legal aid services.
He said “The government has introduced the programme to reduce case backlogs. Arrangements will also be made for settlements if parties wish to reach a compromise during ongoing cases.”
