Luis Díaz and Michael Olise scored in the 89th and 94th minutes as Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid 4-3 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate to reach the Champions League semi-finals after an extraordinary contest in Munich.
With the tie finely balanced following Bayern’s 2-1 first-leg advantage, Real Madrid twice hauled themselves level through two superb early strikes from Arda Güler. But Bayern kept responding, with Aleksandar Pavlović and Harry Kane cancelling out the visitors’ progress before Kylian Mbappé made it 3-3 on aggregate before the break.
As the match drifted towards extra time, the momentum shifted decisively when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off late on. Bayern took full advantage, with Díaz and Olise delivering two outstanding finishes in the final minutes to settle a thrilling quarter-final in dramatic fashion.
Real Madrid could hardly have made a more explosive start. Inside 45 seconds, Güler punished a costly Manuel Neuer mistake to level the tie. The Bayern goalkeeper misjudged a pass, sending it straight to the Turkish midfielder, who struck first time from around 35 yards into an unguarded net.
It was a stunning opening that briefly silenced the Allianz Arena and wiped out Bayern’s advantage from the first leg.
The hosts, however, responded quickly. Joshua Kimmich’s corner caused uncertainty in the Madrid defence, with Andriy Lunin hesitant in coming to claim it. Pavlović took full advantage, rising unmarked to head home from close range and restore Bayern’s aggregate lead.
The pace of the game barely eased. Mbappé threatened as Real looked to respond again, while Bayern remained dangerous through Olise and Kane.
Madrid drew level once more when they won a free-kick on the edge of the area. Although Trent Alexander-Arnold appeared the likely taker, it was Güler who stepped up and curled a brilliant effort into the top corner, with Neuer unable to keep it out.
Bayern had not quite matched the control they showed in the first leg, but they continued to carry menace. Kane restored parity in the tie in the 37th minute, finishing calmly after meeting a through ball from Dayot Upamecano with typical composure for his 50th goal of the season.
Yet there was still more to come before half-time. Vinícius Júnior went close, grazing the top of the crossbar, before Real struck again. A loose touch from Kane allowed Jude Bellingham to release Vinícius down the left, and the Brazilian picked out Mbappé, who finished neatly to make it 4-4 on aggregate in an astonishing first half.
The second half resumed in much the same frantic spirit. Díaz saw an early effort deflect wide off Bellingham, while Upamecano headed over as Bayern searched for another breakthrough.
At the other end, Alexander-Arnold produced a superb cross to pick out Mbappé, whose first-time volley forced an outstanding point-blank save from Neuer.
Madrid continued to threaten. Mbappé created another excellent opening with 20 minutes remaining, but Vinícius failed to connect cleanly after the lay-off and the chance was cleared. Bayern also wasted opportunities, with Upamecano again unable to convert from close range.
Olise twice came close with near-identical efforts, drifting inside onto his left foot and whipping shots just over rather than under the bar.
The turning point arrived five minutes from time. Camavinga, introduced only shortly beforehand, was shown a second yellow card after carrying the ball away and then picking it up following the whistle. It was a costly lapse, and Bayern capitalised almost immediately.
Moments later, Díaz combined smartly with Jamal Musiala before curling a superb effort into the top corner from the very area Camavinga would have been expected to cover.
Real had little time to recover, and Bayern put the tie beyond doubt in stoppage time. Olise, who had threatened throughout, finally got his reward by cutting in onto his left foot and driving a brilliant finish into the net.
