A 25-year-old factory worker was stabbed to death in Old Dhaka’s Lalbagh on Tuesday afternoon, barely a day after a minor quarrel escalated into fatal violence.
The victim, Mohammad Hossain, was attacked around 3:30pm in Shahidnagar Lane while walking home for lunch. Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared him dead at 4:15pm, according to police.
Hossain lived with his family in Shahidnagar and worked at a nearby jewellery-making workshop. The family hails from Kalkini upazila in Madaripur.
His friend Abdul Rakib, who took him to hospital, said the dispute started on Monday night. Hossain and another friend, Nirab, were passing through the lane when local youth Abir, 28, demanded a metal pipe that Nirab was carrying. Nirab refused to give the pipe so Abir slapped him, and Hossain retaliated by slapping Abir.
Local elders intervened and settled the matter the same night.
But around midday on Tuesday, as Hossain walked home after finishing his shift, Abir allegedly ambushed him and stabbed him five to six times in the stomach with a switch-blade knife. Eyewitness caught Abir immediately after the attack.
DMCH Police Camp in-charge Faruk Hossain confirmed the death.
Yasin Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Lalbagh Police Station, said police teams visited the crime scene and the hospital to collect further details.
