The families of the July Mass Uprising victims staged a demonstration and a sit-in programme in the capital on Tuesday, demanding resignation of Law Adviser Asif Nazrul.
Their demand has grown louder as they alleged that many people arrested in connection with the deadly violence during the July Uprising are being bailed out from jail in exchange for money.
At first, the protesters staged a demonstration in front of the National Press Club in the capital in the morning. Later, they proceeded towards the Secretariat and staged a sit-in there.
During the protests, they chanted slogans “We demand resignation”, “We demand Asif Nazrul’s resignation”, “Our one goal, one demand — Asif Nazrul must resign”.
The protesters alleged that many accused in the July massacre cases are getting off scot-free.
“We will not let the blood of our brothers go in vain,” a protester said.
Earlier, when the families of the martyrs and the injured attempted to march towards the Secretariat, police tried to stop them, leading to some scuffles.
The protesters alleged that police kicked and verbally abused them.
Abdul Matin, father of July martyr Sheikh Shahriar, said, “We have been going from door to door for justice for a year now. Even after seeking help from the law ministry, they’re mocking us.”
Aminul Islam, one of the July injured, said, “If we have to return to the streets again, the consequences won’t be good. We’re not afraid of anyone. The government should keep that in mind.”
Meanwhile, the protesters issued an ultimatum before leaving the road in front of the Secretariat around 3pm.
The ultimatum states that they sought explanation from the government by Sunday why the accused in the July massacre cases are being granted bail.
