The Jahangirnagar University administration has sought army deployment inside the campus for the JUCSU election and Hall Parliament elections, along with police presence at the university gates.
University proctor and JUCSU election commission member AKM Rashidul Alam shared this information on Thursday.
He said that the JUCSU Election Commission requested the university administration to deploy the army and police. After that, the university administration sent a letter to the army chief and the inspector general of police (IGP) on August 13.
“The army will be present inside the university as a striking force, they will patrol. In addition, police members will also act as a striking force, but they will be stationed at the gates. The army and police will take action if any kind of chaotic situation arises on the campus,” he added.
AKM Rashidul Alam said, “The administration has taken various steps to ensure the security of the JUCSU elections. Discussions have been held with various organisations around to strengthen the level of security. We also had discussions with various intelligence agencies. We will sit with representatives of each area to ensure that there are no problems from the areas adjacent to the campus.”
The collection of nomination papers for JUCSU election and Hall Parliament election began on August 18. It ended at 2pm on Thursday. Nominations can be submitted by 4pm. After the scrutiny, the draft candidate list will be published on August 25.
Appeals regarding the validity of the nomination papers and against the cancellation will be accepted on August 26 and the appeal hearing will be held on August 27 from 9am to 2pm. The verdict on the appeal will be announced on August 27 at 4pm.
In addition, the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is on August 28 from 9am to 4pm. The final list of candidates will be published on August 29 at 4pm. Candidates will be able to do their campaign from 4pm on that day to 12 midnight on September 9.
