The Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (Jucsu) has launched iTracker, a live tracking system for the university’s transport service.
The system allows students, teachers, officers, and employees to monitor the real-time location of university buses and determine estimated arrival times at specific destinations via their mobile phones.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan formally inaugurated the service at a ceremony held at the university’s Central Field on Sunday.
Speaking at the event, the vice-chancellor said the introduction of this technology-driven system provides passengers with the opportunity to receive instantaneous information regarding bus locations.
He noted that the initiative would save time, make travel more convenient and effective, and have a positive impact on bus movement monitoring and overall transport management.
Ahsan further highlighted that iTracker system would enable the identification of any bus that deviates from its designated route. This is expected to increase accountability within the transport system while reducing fuel wastage and operational costs.
Additionally, the system will allow for the rapid identification of bus locations to facilitate necessary measures during emergencies.
Jucsu Vice-President Abdur Rashid Zitu remarked that the union is working towards making the university’s transport system modern and student friendly.
He noted that, following previous initiatives to introduce electric carts and auto-rickshaws, this live tracking service has now been implemented for the bus fleet.
Through this service, students can use their mobile phones to see exactly where a bus is located and the approximate time it will take to reach its destination. This is intended to reduce waiting times and ensure a more comfortable commuting experience.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Md Shamsul Alam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Md Nazrul Islam, the acting director of Transport Office, Jucsu leaders, representatives from Ifad Group, and various university officials and students.
