Jahangirnagar University (JU) branch Chhatra Dal has staged a protest march against the attack on students and Chhatra Dal activists at Chattogram City College.
A march was brought out from the university’s Shaheed Rafiq-Jabbar Hall premises around 10pm on Tuesday. The march paraded through various roads on campus before concluding in front of Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall. A brief rally was then held there.
Speaking at the rally, Syeda Anannya Faria, a student of the 49th batch of the Law and Justice Department, said violence is recurring even at a time when there is a need for healthy and democratic political practice in the country. She alleged that a certain group has still not been able to break away from the path of violent politics, which is destabilising the campus as well as the country.
She further said, a call is being made to move away from such activities and build a peaceful political environment; otherwise, ordinary students will react against it.
JU branch Chhatra Dal Convener Zahir Uddin Babar said, given the recent political context, they are working to establish tolerant and student-welfare-oriented politics on campus. However, this patience cannot be seen as a weakness. He described the attack at Chattogram City College as condemnable.
He warned that if violent politics is not abandoned, JU Chhatra Dal will build a strong movement involving ordinary students, and any attempt to destabilise the campus will be resisted.
